It can be very exciting when visiting an animal shelter. As animal lovers, we want to embrace all the animals and show them love and compassion but it is important we practice safety when visiting the shelter. You may have had many animals over the course of your lifetime and or worked in a shelter before but we must be careful around the animals. Yes, for your safety, but for theirs as well. Some animals are skittish and get scared easily, some may come from an abusive home, and some may not have had any type of training.
Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind while visiting the SPCA:
⇨ Do not bang on windows or doors or rattle cages.
⇨ Do not yell or be aggressive.
⇨ Do not feed the animals unless permission is given. Some animals have dietary issues.
⇨ Do not walk quickly upon an animal.
⇨ Do not put your face in front of an animal.
⇨ If doors are closed and animals are in cages, there is a reason for it.
⇨ Do not poke your fingers or hands in through the cages.
